Confronted with reality – conflicting tempers, financial difficulties, and language barriers – their happiness lasted only a few years. The rhythm that the lower string instruments play underneath is very agitated. In 1850 he became head librarian at the Paris Conservatoire, the only official post he would ever hold, and a valuable source of income. Towns visited included Berlin, Hanover, Leipzig, Stuttgart, Weimar, Hechingen, Darmstadt, Dresden, Brunswick, Hamburg, Frankfurt and Mannheim. Some scholars divide Beethoven's career, rather artificially, into three periods; the Symphony No. 5 belongs to the second of these periods, and the String Quartet op. 131 to the third. (The first period includes works that are considered to be closest to the Viennese Classical style of Mozart and Haydn.) Much of the music of the 19th century has been called "Romantic" music, so that Romanticism in Western music is considered the sequel to Classicism.

The unconventional music of Berlioz irritated the established concert and opera [7] scene. Many composers show themselves opposed to this new instrument, because, since its introduction into orchestras, certain horn-players, using the pistons for playing ordinary [natural] horn parts, find it more convenient to produce by this mechanism, as open notes, notes intentionally written as closed notes by the author.
